The Poets : Committed Women

As a woman and an artist, I wanted to pay homage to these timeless figures, pioneers who defied conventions, up to the contemporaries who continue to transform our societies through their words. Let them sing of love, denounce injustice or celebrate life, they remind us that words have the power to change the world.

Through this exhibition, I invite you to discover works where commitment meets poetry, where feminine sensitivity combines with a universal force. Let's enter their world, let us listen to their whisper and their cry, and let us be inspired by their courage and their light.

Activist poets

The exhibition pays tribute to committed women poets whose words carry the struggles, human hopes and dreams. Their writings are presented as rich interior spaces, where art becomes both a weapon, refuge and means of revolt.

The artist explains his approach : as a woman, she wishes to celebrate these figures – from pioneers to contemporaries – who shake up norms and transform society through words. Let them talk about love, denounce injustice or celebrate life, their words have transformative power.

The public is invited to enter these poetic universes where commitment and sensitivity come together, to listen to these voices and be inspired by their courage.

Rouge, color of living speech

Red symbolizes vital energy : and high, the life, but also hurt and anger.
The works (tulle collages, Posca drawings) translate this intensity through shapes evoking veins, volcanoes or escape routes.
Each creation seeks to open a listening space for these female voices.

Pioneers : to write, draw, resist

Silva Usta continues her Pioneer series, with new perspectives, new lines.
Through his very graphic black felt-tip portraits, enhanced with red tulle, the visual artist – of Armenian origin and born in Istanbul – gives visibility to those who campaign for civil and human rights.

After presenting her Pioneers of the Promenade des Anglais in Nice to the main Library of Courbevoie, she extends this series with close-up portraits of female writers, poets and artists.

“I wanted to pay tribute to those who have defied conventions throughout history, and those who still today, defend at the risk of their lives, free speech », recalls the artist, who lives and works in Nice.

What do their origins matter?, These women have in common that they fight their battle through action but also through language..
Adrienne Rich, Zabel Essayan, Rupi Kaur, Assata Shakur… have you ever seen their faces ? read their works ?

Between original drawings, prints on Rhodoid or canvas, they invest the Poet Bistrot in Nice with their presence.

“I am not free while any other woman is deprived of her freedom, even if his channels are very different from mine”, wrote Audre Geraldine Lorde, who defined herself as “black, lesbian, feminist, mother, warrior and poetess ».

Among these Pioneers, we also meet Pinar Selek, antimilitarist sociologist, victim of repression in Türkiye and exiled in France. “They think they’re tiring me out, but they won’t be able to put out the fireflies”, writes the author, whose work The Turkish Cauldron describes the stages of the construction of male hegemonic domination.

War is not just about weapons, it is also determined on the ground of representations, imaginations.

Like the words of these Pioneers, Silva Usta chose to make the image a counter-power, sensible.

Tattoo parlor by Silva Usta

The reflection about the artistic project “Tatoothérapie” began on 27 June 2017.
I wanted to take time. This photographic and oral project on tattoo is an achievement and it is close to my heart.

This is hard work from a human point of view as those who participated, had to let me into their privacy, and it is an upheaval.

Once in my studio, on my pink chair, over a coffee, sometimes with a square of chocolate, the meeting was becaming friendly, sensitive and intimate.

I thank my models who have trusted me and who opened the door of their history and their emotions. About all that means or evokes their tattoos through this living space that I was to listen and photograph.

Through this exhibition, I present to you this long term work. I hope you, public, will welcome with pleasure this retrospective.

I also think that you will enjoy to discover this patchwork of stories described in my catalog. It recounts all the stages of this human experience that I named Tatootherapie.

The gesture

In this collective exhibition, I choose to express the gesture by the feet.

Those who walk, who flee, that cross mountains and borders.

Their gesture is simple and immense : move forward, encore, despite the pain, Despite fear.

Worn shoes are traces of these steps, vestiges of existence arrested or transformed by the trip.

I evolve in the sea

If Silva Usta owes her health, In such a good age, to its daily use of bicycle to move, The sea remains its favorite playground to keep shape and have fun. Nage, rowing, Walk on the Bay of Angels, are part of his routine and his pleasures.

Ocean is an invitation to explore a miniature world, A series of small boxes where the sea becomes the scene of poetic stories. Suspension jellyfish, women in swimsuit absorbed by the horizon, boats deriving according to currents… Each scene captures a fragment of this moving universe, where water memory shapes silent stories.

Through these intimate compositions, I question our relationship to immensity and infinitely small, to the sea as a refuge, playground or unfathomable mystery. Ocean is a collection of snapshots, A cabinet of curiosities floating between dreams and reality.

Professor Alexandre Meinesz

I had honor to welcome Professor Meinesz for my exhibition.

Alexandre Meinesz is a professor of biology at the University of Nice-Sophia-Antipolis. He is a specialist in underwater vegetation, that he studied during thousands of dives in the tropical environment and especially in the Mediterranean. In the years 80, He was one of the scientists who denounced the Caulerpa.

Alexandre Meinesz is the author of the book Mediterranean Mer Vivante For the Lions Club Nice Doyen. This book is free. It is designed for better marine environmental education in the Mediterranean with two large chapters : protected species and protected areas.

Beyond writing 2

Le Grimaldi hotel, a sublime case

The establishment invites visitors to an artistic stroll starting in the hall and continuing in the halls of the hotel. Called »Artscenic with old lace», This exhibition presents around forty creations made specially for the hotel by the artist Silva Uta.

Both delicate and refined, These works are representations of old photographs of Nice, recalling the vibrant memories of the Belle Epoque and the Roaring Twenties. These periods are marked by a cultural wealth whose hotel facade, made by architect Charles Dalmas in 1904, is a precious witness.

Silva Usta was invited for an eclectic exhibition of her latest works at the Dodo café on the Port of Nice, 5 Place Islands of Beauty.

A great opportunity to discover the artist's recent creations through abstract paintings and colorful drawings. Invited by the municipality of COURBEVOIE, SILVA USTA presented his now famous drawing creation PIONEERING WOMEN for the 8 mars 2024. This is part of a traveling exhibition in various public places such as town halls., schools, maternity wards, hospitals, and other public institutions. As part of major events organized throughout France for Women's Rights Day, the City of Nice asked Silva Usta for its artistic exhibition of Pioneer Women. In conjunction with the exhibition in Courbevoie, Nice town hall has made its pergolas on the Promenade des Anglais available to install replicas of the artist's now famous work : Pioneer Women.

It is always with great pleasure that Silva Usta presents the Women who have left their mark on Science, Literature, Arts, the economy, the morals and politics of Modern Times. She continues to be dazzled by the sisters who have left their mark on History, and, paying tribute to them, it is the older and younger generations that she calls to educate themselves, never forgetting the struggles and victories that allowed women to exist and become free to improve the world.

Carried by the strong message of the artist, the town halls of Nice and Courbevoie responded with determination and strong conscience to Silva Usta's proposal.

Silva creates, with a heart in perpetual labor, a constant interaction between the centuries and the plurality of paths. Some famous names and others more veiled participate in this universal unity. Here is a dialogue that explains the whole problem :

– Oh women's day. It's a good idea to celebrate femininity, the beauty, sweetness, the kindness of women. What would we be without their ability to raise children, to keep a clean home, cooking and making our laundry so soft ?..

– No but Alchy, you have no shame ? (I know you are joking, it's to make me talk !) It's Women's Rights Day. ! The one who recognizes their equality and equity with men. The right to study, to have a job, to emancipate oneself from the patriarchy of our old societies. It is a day of Men's Duty to achieve equality in the home and in everyday life.. Ce 8 mars 2023 Silva Usta was invited to the Lycée Thierry Maulnier to raise awareness among students about this world day which seeks to recognize the inalienable rights of women in our societies..

Déjà 150 years of Carnival in Nice and an important quarter of artists and elected officials wanted to challenge themselves to reinterpret the official Carnival poster under the nose and beard of the Mayor who could only accept it.

25 artists set about creating their own Carnival poster and exhibiting them ! They gave themselves the instruction to attack only the King, to the Queen, to the Ratapignata (the bat, independence identity) and at the King's Court. Nothing less ! You will recognize the cartoon character. He was a great influence on certain political figures in Nice who were inspired by his program that some will consider nauseating. Unlucky candidate however in the last presidential, accused of racism, of sexism and religionism to the great regret of an animator who had not paid attention to the creature he was creating at the time. Now the bat, gloomy this one unlike ours, very Nice and from all walks of life, it looks like plumes, who will make jas.z.er… And dance !

The “Pioneering Women” exhibition, by the artist Silva Usta, coming to an end.
Located at Port Lympia College, the works in the exhibition are withdrawn today, after being presented for almost four months.

Olympe de Gouges "the revolutionary", Rosie the riveter “the unexpected icon of feminism”, or even Virginia Woolf “the sensitive woman”. These portraits of more or less well-known women are exhibited at Port Lympia College.. First presented in life-size format on the exterior walls of the flea market, the works were at the entire disposal of the people of Nice until November 1st. “It was awesome (…) every time I passed in front of the market, I saw passers-by stopping to look at the signs”, rejoices the artist. It is a tribute to all these outstanding women in history, those who have emancipated themselves from the rules of their time by expressing their desire for freedom. For Silva Usta, the visual artist “it was complicated to make a choice (…) I wanted to represent as many nationalities as possible and not stay in the French microcosm”. The objective is simple : educate young people about art and about women and their place in our societies. “It is my duty to inform young people (…) educate boys and show girls that anything is possible”, says the artist.

“The future is the youth”

For Silva Usta, the objective of awakening the artistic sensitivity and open-mindedness of young people is fulfilled. Activities were organized every Tuesday afternoon with schools coming from all over the city. Pupils from primary to high school discovered these portraits. “The younger the children, the more curious and open-minded they are”, says the artist. “I remember a very young boy who was stuck in front of one of the portraits, he exclaimed : she's pretty but she's also brave ! And that's exactly the message I want to pass on to this generation.", rejoices the visual artist. This is the first time that Silva Usta has exhibited his works in a school. This is the first but certainly not the last time (…) the future is the youth”, explains the artist. It is therefore a full box for the visual artist and her exhibition. She was recently asked by the Thierry Maulnier high school for a new project, enough to allow an artistic awakening to new young people.

Of Armenian descent, Silva Usta was born in Istanbul, city ​​in which she lived until she was fifteen before moving to Strasbourg. She moved to Nice in 1980, and took plastic art classes at Villa Thiole. On 2001, she creates her studio in Nice, located rue Gounod, in the Musicians quarter.

In an educational approach geared towards the younger generations, Silva Usta presents her Les Femmes Pionnières exhibition at Port Lympia College.

After the immense joy of exhibiting PIONEER WOMEN to the Nice Flea Market from September 1 to November 1 2022 in large glued formats, the life-size and digital exhibition will take place at Port Lympia College, from 29 September 2022 to the 26 January 2023, as part of cultural awareness work with college students.

The Educational Community of PORT LYMPIA COLLEGE, under the tutelage of Mrs. Valérie NEUMANN will present 29 September 26 January THE PIONEER WOMEN of Silva USTA, with the aim of raising awareness among students about the divisiveness that women face in our societies.

The opening of the exhibition, to which you are invited, will be held on Thursday 29 September from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Port Lympia College, 31 Bd Stalingrad, 06300 NICE. During these weeks of school exhibition there will be several openings of the space to the public, with the intervention of the artist and the curator of the exhibition Madame Mélanie BOUILLAUD.

PIONEER WOMEN will be offered in life-size reproduction on the 12 exterior panels of the Nice Flea Market.

The exhibition will take place from September 1 to November 1 2022. It will be done jointly with the exhibition of the original pieces at the Port Lympia College in Nice, from 29 September 2022 to the 26 January 2023, as part of cultural awareness work with college students.

The last exhibition "supremacy / exclusion” of Silva Usta expresses his outrage at the growing denial of human rights.

It is an installation in the form of two panels of 7 m long on 2 m high, illustrating the exodus of populations undergoing wars, crimes against humanity and genocides in the face of a cosmopolitan and plural society in complete freedom.

At the origin there is indignation, this positive refusal, this high consideration of justice and love where the struggles for the rights of women and all come together, whatever their ethnic origins, cultural, religions and their sexual orientation.

Silva Usta discovered in the international press the deportation of Uyghurs from Xinjiang and their internment. A situation that echoed in the interiority of this visual artist, who then developed an obsessive research practice on the exodus of populations linked to wars, crimes against humanity or, in the extreme, genocide. A subject, subjects, which led her to the creation of large human frescoes, monumental, commensurate with his anger at the denial of human rights at the state and territory level.

In a first set, each character or group testifies to a particular fact : the trade of black slaves to the New World, the Genocide of Armenian Christians in the Ottoman Empire, the Holocaust by the Nazi regime and pogroms by Russia, as well as the exodus of refugees during the Vietnam War and the exile of refugees who perish today in the Mediterranean. Souls traced with black felt-tip pen, whose silhouette springs from the immaculate white paper. Their very graphic aesthetic is reminiscent of the previous feminist series by Silva Usta, dubbed “Pioneers”, in tribute to those who fought for rights and freedoms in the world.

In this new work in large format, the visual artist induces a relationship of scale between the visitor and these oversized characters, freed from the notion of color. Without getting lost in documentary precision, here she launches a visceral cry of woman and citizen in the face of inter-human violence : enslavement, the deportation of populations, severe deprivation of liberty, whether for economic reasons, policies, cultural, and/or ethnic.

Return of the beautiful exhibition of photos of the tattooed. Silva Usta exhibits at Les Pépites and also presents various jewels there, sculptures, drawings and engravings from her universe rich in artistic variety and solidly feminine.

"Freedom" is the theme chosen for the 27th edition of the Parcours de l'Art.

Like a banner, like the flag in the famous painting by Eugène Delacroix, freedom floats in all minds guiding the individual and collective revolutions of this 21st century.

The theme of "freedom" denotes a new breath, an inspiring breath : new artists scheduled, new spirit and artistic direction !

This edition 2021 dedicated to "freedom" will draw the contours of a future of which the arts - we deeply hope – are the fertile ground.

Many women today still have to answer to society, to men, to religions and unfortunate and false reputations that can be attributed to them.

Silva Usta pays tribute to the women who discovered, built and defended the world.

If sometimes in the history of mankind it has been thought that women appeared in the 20th century in their desire to assert a free identity, Silva Usta reminds us in her precious work that, at all times, women have played their part in all fields, knowledge, of creation, of life…

These pioneering women turned the history of mankind upside down.

The etymologically pioneer is the one who walks: first an infantryman, then the one that highlights new lands, finally the metaphorical aspect becomes essential, he advances, to advance humanity. The feminine of this word gives to the various actions of courageous women this liberating humanist dimension..

Silva creates, with a heart in perpetual work, a constant interaction between the centuries and the plurality of paths. Some famous names and others more veiled participate in this universal unity. Willingness, challenge and perseverance are the engines of fundamental change: live your life freely and choose your destiny!

Silva presents these women in their diversity and singular individuality., as she herself is a protean artist.

A precise technique brings them together: the use of black felt of course and the choice of tulle glued on the drawings. Doesn't he express this lightness of being, that femininity that refuses to get stuck in the ravines of anger? Certainly these Pioneers were able to experience thirst as well as hunger, laughter like tears, wounds and / or gentleness but they remain open on their threshold and the future remains Light

On the occasion of the great start of the Tour de France in Nice 2020, the City of Nice has created numerous street and museum activities and exhibitions.

“Exposure and personal performance at the Gateway”

After the success of its exhibitions Tatoothérapie, Usta Silva gave a new exhibition tour performance to painting.

“Exhibition of Silva Usta. With performances of Kadija, Lisie Philip, Anthony Alberti, and Magali Revest with Frederic Pasquini”

The reflection about the artistic project “Tatoothérapie” began on 27 June 2017.
I wanted to take time. This photographic and oral project on tattoo is an achievement and it is close to my heart.

This is hard work from a human point of view as those who participated, had to let me into their privacy, and it is an upheaval.

Once in my studio, on my pink chair, over a coffee, sometimes with a square of chocolate, the meeting was becaming friendly, sensitive and intimate.
I thank my models who have trusted me and who opened the door of their history and their emotions. About all that means or evokes their tattoos through this living space that I was to listen and photograph.

Through this exhibition, I present to you this long term work. I hope you, public, will welcome with pleasure this retrospective.

I also think that you will enjoy to discover this patchwork of stories described in my catalog. It recounts all the stages of this human experience that I named Tatootherapie.
